Visits to Newfoundland’s many significant cultural sites will delight history buffs. Spend time in St. Anthony, home of Sir Wilfred Grenfell’s medical mission. Here, learn the story of Grenfell’s influence on the social, medical and economic climate of the early 1900s – Grenfell built the province’s first hospital, created the first co-op lumber mill and built the first orphanage. A tour of L’Anse aux Meadows, North America’s only authenticated Viking settlement, is a dramatic step back in time to 1000 AD. You will have an opportunity to explore three Norse buildings from the 11th century and see ancient artifacts of daily Viking life, including bronze cloak pins, stone oil maps, spindle whorls, iron boat nails, small whetstones and a bone needle.
